I have been working on the old barn piece, now doing the rock fence that runs across the foreground.  This was my second attempt as the first one was just too "colorful".  I will save it though for another piece it may work on.  It is coming together now but still need a few more rocks.

It has been a cold summer so far.   Today it is barely in the 60's.  They are talking about a warmup soon.  We had one a few weeks ago but it did not last.  I am so ready for some warm weather again....it was a long cold winter.   My garden is good though.  Blooming is late but that is okay.

These beds are new.....we have only been in this house a year and there was no garden back by the woods.   I am very happy with the progress it is making after only one year of being in.   I am trying to keep a woodland look to it.
Henry is the character on the left.  He is so beautiful and I love the addition of him to the bed.  My dear husband, Mike, hauled him down to his new home and let me tell you, he is heavy!  The wrens, finches, chickadees love to perch on his head.    I hope to catch them doing that some day.

Snow & Quilting

I have been working mainly on the machine quilting.  All the barn board is finished and each rock has been quilting around.  Shingles are also finished and the wire for the barbed wire fence is in.  Then I added some drifted snow on the roof and the pine tree and just a little on the barn itself.   I like to have a drawing so that I can slowly work my way into the foreground.

Next will be the tall bare tree running up the right side and then horses and stone fence.

In between I have been picking up around the house and working on my new gardens.  When Mike and I bought this house a year ago, there was nothing in the yard.  The previous owner and only owner of this house did not like the outdoors so had some evergreen bushes across the front and nothing else.  They were overgrown and past their prime so we pulled them all out and started over.  I will take some pictures tomorrow and post them.  It looks so much better now if I say so myself.  A new garden makes for a lot of watering and because we have a lot of deer, I have to spray them with deer stinky stuff so they are not eaten.  Last year I lost many of my hostas to them gobbling.  I love the deer so understand they were just hungry.  However, now I protect my plants so they will go back to the woods to eat.

.

I have quilted the pine tree and the windmill onto the background and then fused the barn in place along with some fence posts.  Today I will spend my time in the studio quilting the barns and the fence.  Most likely I will not finish in one day.  Lots of detail in doing the roofs and the wood siding so it takes a bit of time.   I am please with this so far but there is so much more to come.

I had some trouble with my machine.  I use a Bernina 440QE.  It was with the race cover and the bobbin.  Luckily I also have a Bernina 1020.  It is my first Bernina and I still use it from time to time.  The parts are the same!  So I switched them out and installed them in my 440!  Woolah!  Back in business.   I went ahead and ordered new parts but now do not have to wait until they arrive.

We are having the perfect rainy weather for staying in the studio and not being tempted to go outside to the garden or just sit on the deck and read in the warm sun.  So back to work!

NEW WORK BEGINS

I am beginning a new piece.  This one came about sort of by accident.  I had someone contact me to do a commission.  We discussed details etc. and go to the point of me sketching two ideas and sending her the price of each.  This one originally had a old broken down tractor in it.  She asked me to change it to horses, which I did.  Then I told her I would send her the contract and as soon as I recieved 1/2 down and the signed contract back I would begin.  I never heard from her again and unfortunately had only gotten her name and email address.

I understand people changing their minds (usually happens right away though due to something like price or how long it will take).  This one was already much further along and for me, I would have like some courtesy from her giving me a heads up for whatever reason made her change her mind.

However, I am now going to use this design for my own shop and work on it anyway.  It is, as you can see, right up my alley.

So I have started with the barn.  It is a winter scene so will go on a white background.  I want the barn finished first and will just pin it on so I can fit all the background items in behind it.  It also helps me keep the proportions accurate.   I am excited to work on it because farm scenes are so much fun for me to do.

SUNFLOWER MORNING

 SUNFLOWER MORNING
32 X 20 INCHES
(Stretched on Stretcher bars)

I finished this art quilt today.  I love making Sunflower quilts and do it all free hand.  I love that part of it because it is so much fun to just cut out each piece without much thought other than color and grouping them just right.
As you can see I made these flowers at different stages of their growth.  Some are fully open while others like these are just opening.

I found this hand dyed background fabric with rays of light going thru it and though it complimented these flowers well.  Something different from the blue you usually see them featured on too.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.  I will start a Wisconsin farm scene next but it will most likely take a while as I am also working on my flower beds.  I moved into this house a year ago with my husband and best friend, Mike.  He and I have been making it our own since and still have a few things left to do like paint some rooms and new floor and appliances for the kitchen.  Outside we just built a new deck and I am working of new flower beds around the house.  The previous owner did not like flowers I guess as there were only bushes and trees in the yard.  So it is a much larger project than it would have been if there were existing beds.   I love doing it though so no problem there.

MOONLIGHT SANCTUARY

Well I am shocked that it has been all this time since I last posted something here.  Time just has a way of speedily moving fast these da...
